Copy Cat Scarf Adorned Belt Tutorial

This is a tutorial on how to create a copy cat of this Anthropologie Scarf Adorned Belt

This retails for $58.00.  You can check it out here.

Mine cost $7.25.  The belt was a clearance find at TJMaxx.  It cost $5.00.  The scarf was a garage sale find and was .25 cents.  Score!  And the purse rings were $2.00 from Joann.  Here is how it turned out.

I entered this in the copy cat challenge over at Sew Much Ado.  Wish me luck!  If you have anything you have made recently that is a copy cat you should enter.  There are some really great prizes!  If not you should still check out all the fun things that have been created.

I love the way the belt turned out.  Mostly because it really does look like an Anthro and I finally had a way to use this fantastic scarf.  I have always loved this scarf.  It has been tucked away in a drawer for about 15 years!  I can hardly even believe that!  I was in collage when my best friend and I found a garage sale that had a huge box of vintage scarves and handkerchiefs.   I didn't sew back then so I only picked a few favorites.  If only I could go back in time!  Oh well, I did get this one.

Here's how to make one of your own.

Scarf Adorned Belt Tutorial

There are 2 ways to make this belt.  You can choose a stiff leather belt like the one shown above and use rivets to secure the rings, or you can choose a softer more malleable leather belt that can be sewn to secure rings.  You will need a leather needle if you choose option 2.

What you will need:
  • Leather belt
  • scarf
  • 2 purse rings that fit width of belt
  • rivets (optional)

Step1:  Choose your leather belt.

You will want to find one that will be long enough to go around about 80% of your waist after you have cut off the buckle and buckle holes.

Step2:  Prepare your belt.

You will cut off the buckle and buckle holes and cut the ends into a crescent shape.

Step 3:  Slide on purse ring and fold over end wrong sides together.  You will do this for both ends.

Step 4:  Secure Rings

If you are using a soft malleable leather you will fold over the leather about an inch securing your ring in place wrong sides together and top stitch 1/8" from seam.  Repeat for opposite end.

If using rivets you will fold over your leather belt about an inch wrong sides together and with your snaps pliers punch a hole through both pieces.  You will want to make sure it is centered.

When you have penetrated both pieces of leather you will put your rivet cap and post in place and position the setter over the cap.  Strike it with a hammer and you have a fixed rivet.  You will do this on both sides.  (Directions come with rivets)

Step 5:  Prepare your scarf

You will start by folding your scarf in half wrong sides together and corner to corner then at the folded edge you will fold up your scarf approximately 4" until the entire scarf is folded.

Step 6:  Top stitch a 1/8" seam down both sides the full length of the scarf.  This will give you secured scarf strips that are easier to tie.

Step 7:   Fold your scarf in half and cut into 2 pieces at the folded edge.  Stitch ends to secure and prevent fraying.  You will end up with 2 scarf strips at this point.

Step 8:  Put scarf through rings and fold under raw edge on the under side of belt.  Pin in place then stitch 1/8" from seam.

When you are finished it will look like this.

Congratulations!  You now have a Scarf Adorned Belt.   All you have to do is put it on, tie a bow, and make your fashion statement.

  1. I love a belt like this, but I like to pair it with any scarf which matchs my outfit. Maybe I will tie scarf on it, not sew.
